*******Letter from the Editor*******
Dear Health Enthusiasts,
This year has brought a new light to the FDA. For those of us that believe in using natural health methods first and foremost, the FDA's recent antics are nothing new, but many are getting their first taste of how the big pharmacutical company dollars can influence government. It's time we stepped up and took back control of our own health. Our watch dogs are failing us, now we have to educate ourselves about what is safe and what isn't.

Vitamin D may protect the Elderly
I came across an interesting analysis in this week's British Medical Journal about the elderly and their lack of vitamin D. The author of the piece recommends giving elderly patients high doses of vitamin D supplements to safeguard them from fractures and falls. Moreover, he believes the elderly, especially those who live nursing homes or are homebound, suffer more acutely from vitamin D deficiency than has been previously recognized.
The root of the problem, according to the article: Because of their skin's reduced capacity to synthesize the provitamin calcidiol, elderly patients may have poor muscle strength and weakness.
The author cites a number of studies that support vitamin D supplementation, including quite a few that demonstrate how it reduces the amount of falls. He also recognizes two major roadblocks standing in the way of seniors (particularly the housebound) receiving optimal amounts of vitamin D:
A lack of exposure to sunshine
British Medical Journal March 5, 2005;330:524-526
Q. I am asking what product would work for my son who is
exposed to cleaners all day long when detailing cars. I understand
essential oils in a diffuser can work or you have a homeopathic
product for detoxing. He already has a kidney condition where
he takes flax oil to keep him from passing too much protein. I
was told that homeopathic does not work in combination with essential
oils and that essential oils can loose their effectiveness if
used for long period of time.
A. With a situation that involves constant contact with chemical irritants, I always recommend an herbal product by Nature's Sunshine called Enviro-Detox. It helps to detoxify the system of the constant toxins our bodies are hit with everyday.
Regarding using essential oils, it can be beneficial to use Lemon Bio mixed directly with the paints to help combat some of the toxic effects. Nature's Sunsine also offers the homeopathic Detoxification. Homeopathics are safe for extended use and will be effective for the duration. I have never heard that they would not work in conjunction with essential oils and have found them to be effective when taken together.
However, keep in mind that these are not going to totally prevent damage caused by constant exposure to such a toxic environment. Only a job change can really take care of that.
